Application software is a set of instructions given by the user to the computer to perform and accomplish the assigned tasks successfully. For this purpose it requires systems software, utilities, operating system and hardware.
When the user requests for the task, application software performs it. The application software is much closer to the user than the computer because it processes the tasks that are ordered by user. It is different from operating system because an operating system performs for the computer whereas application software performs tasks based on user's perspective.
Microsoft Suite is an example of application software because it consists of many other applications like word, excel, outlook, power point and access. Even though the functionality is same, the applications differ.
